At Accuscan, a heart scan is included in our full body scan. However, knowing there are special instances in which a patient wants only to look at the condition of their heart (Strong family history of early heart disease) we do offer a heart scan by itself.
This intricate study is valuable in showing microscopic amounts of calcification in coronary arteries, the earliest predictor of heart disease. Your calcium level will be calculated and measured in comparison to patients within the same demographics to determine your potential risk. Your "calcium score" indicates the statistical likelihood of coronary events in your future. If you were to receive a high score in comparison to others in your age group we would refer you to a specialist for further evaluation and studies. Your written report and CD will be sent to your home or may be forwarded to your physician of choice.
The treadmill stress test, a traditional milieu for evaluating heart disease, looks for blockages of blood flow in the coronary arteries. Unfortunately, by the time heart disease is evident in a treadmill test, the arteries are usually more than 70% blocked. This indicates advanced heart disease, and in general the patient is already experiencing symptoms. The heart scan, in contrast, can detect heart disease when the arteries are only in the initial stages of building plaque and the patient is totally asymptomatic. At this stage a problem can be mediated through lifestyle adjustments or minimal medication. Hopefully surgical intervention or a future cardiac event can be avoided altogether.
One in four Americans are currently dying from heart disease. The technology we offer at Accuscan holds potential for drastically changing that statistic. Take control of your life, visit Accuscan, a whole new way of looking at your health.
